Brooklyn Newsletter Issue 40, Wed 4 Aug

There are a lot of similarities to Summer and Winter. Both can yield uncomfortable weather. Both require drastic attire, and both have holidays where you get to do cool stuff. One thing I've noticed about summer is that people tend to just get dirty. People go to the beach and swim in water that oceanic creatures urinate in and then they go and get sand all over them. No matter what you say sand is still dirt. It's just not as refined. Snow is just frozen moisture. It is provided by the same life source that hydrates you. Except the yellow stuff, that like the ocean is filled with urine.

Words of Wisdom from the Knitting Factory Guru!

Mucca Pazza
The Stumblebums
Starring

Mucca Pazza is the marching band that thinks it's a rock 'n roll band. The group is a collection of shameless band nerds wielding instruments of incongruous traditions, sometimes in competition, often in cooperation. With speakers strapped firmly to heads, their rambunctious live show has brought them to such acclaimed venues as the Late Show with Conan O'Brien, Lollapalooza, and a fleet of canoes floating down the Chicago River.

Their music skips from genre to unnameable genre, never settling in one place for long, but held together by the band's unmistakable sound and irresistible energy. To their credit, they only have one march in their original repertoire, their other music includes zombie-mambo, snake-charmer-metal, gypsy-reggaeton, punk-classical, and some demented arrangements of Dmitri Shostakovich, Bela Bartok, and famed Egyptian composer Kemal El Tawil.

Chris Brokaw
unFact (David Wm. Sims of Jesus Lizard)
Peg Simone

Chicago-based sound artist J.R. Robinson has been creating live, ambient tonefields in museums around the US and Europe over the past two years-including the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the Pompidou Center in Paris, and The Art Center Berlin.

Robinson has injected these recordings into collaborations with some like-minded heavy hitters from the noise, post-rock and jazz worlds such as David Yow (Jesus Lizard/Scratch Acid), Mark Shippy & Pat Samson (US Maple), Azita Youssefi, John Herndon & Jeff Parker (Tortoise), Keefe Jackson, Fred Lonberg-Holm and Ken Vandermark. The result (dubbed Wrekmeister Harmonies), is a distinctive hybrid of sound art and avant-garde musics, evoking the essences & influences of masterworks like Joe McPhee's Nation Time, Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music and the sound collages of Stockhausen.

Midnight Show:
The Hood Internet

ABX (pronounced like three consecutive letters) and STV SLV (pronounced "steve sleeve") are collectively known as The Hood Internet. For the past three years, the duo have been chewing up the indie, pop, rap and R&B landscapes and spitting out pure fire. Like laptop-armed alchemists, they draw from their expansive interest in the many faces of modern music and re-imagine songs for mass public consumption through thehoodinternet.com.

Nearly 400 mixes and literally millions of free downloads later, The Hood Internet continue to ricochet across North America like an Arkanoid ball, bringing their arsenal of reassembled tracks to crowded dancefloors. And the dance parties have definitely been ignited in every city they roll through, not to mention holding it down at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Monolith Festival, SXSW, CMJ and Canadian Music Week.

Version City Party
Hub City Stompers
Unlikely Alibi
Uzimon & the Dons

Hub City Stompers hail from the "hub city" of New Brunswick, NJ. Formed in the summer of 2002 in the wasteland of the seemingly "dead" ska scene, these necromaniacs romanced ska's rotted corpse, playing for the love of the music rather than the popularity of it, and formed a force to be reckoned with in the New Jersey music scene.

Embracing various styles and eras of ska from the 60's through the 80's, and adding reggae, punk, oi!, hardcore, jazz and even classical influences, they manage to avoid a typical, formulaic ska sound and steer clear of cliche poppy ska lyrics.

Hub City Stompers' line up consists of ex-members of bands such as Inspecter 7, Tri State Conspiracy, Professor Plum, Foil, and Predator Dub Assassins.

Six Gallery

SIX GALLERY formed in the summer of 2005 as a four-piece instrumental act in the small university town of Athens, Ohio. In just two short years they released two EPs, graduated from college, relocated to Columbus, Ohio, replaced a drummer and played around 100 shows throughout the Midwest and Northeast. In November 2008, SIX GALLERY changed the direction of their instrumental progressive post rock sound with the addition of vocalist Daniel Francis. With a full line-up for the first time they began the writing and rehearsal process for their debut LP, "Breakthroughs in Modern Art".

Movie Sing-a-Longs!
The most fun families can have at the movies!
The Jungle Book
$8 for adults // $4 for kids

Hosted by Jeremy Pollet, comedian and kids entertainer, with a snarky puppet side-kick! Each week will feature a new movie with the lyrics on-screen during musical numbers. Theme costume encouraged, trivia games with prizes, and drinks for kids and adults!

The Jungle is jumping in this 1967 Disney classic where Bagheera the Panther and Baloo the Bear have a difficult time trying to convince a boy to leave the jungle for human civilization.

The songs are genius! I'm talking The Bare Necessities and I Wanna Be Like You.

Version City Party:
The Bluebeats
Top Shottaz, The Forthrights, Hey, Stranger, The Cool and Deadly

Formed by Mike Drance, ex-lead singer and songwriter of the popular New York ska band, The Scofflaws, The Bluebeats recapture the sound of the original Jamaican ska, creating a sound that is at the same time both classic and fresh. By combining strong vocals and rock-solid rhythms with original songs and Jamaican classics, The Bluebeats have been making fans whenever they perform.

Since forming in the summer of 1994, The Bluebeats have appeared at Tramps, The Wetlands, SOBs in New York City as well as performing at many tri-state area clubs and colleges. The band has appeared with such acts as The Skatalites, Culture, Desmond Decker, Ken Boothe, Alton Ellis, Phyllis Dillon, Jimmy Cliff, Yellowman, Eek-A-Mouse, and Hopeton Lewis.

A pinnacle moment for the group was when Roland Alphonso, a founding member of The Skatalites, joined the band on stage at the Cooler in New York City. In the spring of 1998, The Bluebeats toured Europe supporting a bill that featured Jamaican legends Dave Barker and Laurel Aitken.

John Brodeur

NYC-based recording artist John Brodeur took eight years to release his second solo album, Get Through. Why the long wait? His vague explanation: "It was supposed to come out years ago, but it didn't."

This album has been a roadblock, a detour, and ultimately a self-fulfilling prophecy. It's a back-against-the-wall record with a built-in exit strategy. As the title track goes, "If it's all that you can do, just get through." And now Get Through, as the title aptly implies, will finally get through to music fans.

John has shared stages with Fountains of Wayne, Greg Laswell, They Might Be Giants, TV On The Radio, 311, the Nightwatchman, Gavin Degraw, O.A.R., Rooney, Glenn Tilbrook, Shiny Toy Guns, the Bravery, Freedy Johnston, David Poe, and dozens more.
